EnChroma- Colour Vision Lenses

EnChroma- Colour Vision Lenses

Enchroma lenses and Colour deficiency: It’s difficult to conceive how colour deficient people see the world compared to colour normal people. The eye contains three different pigments that absorb light form different parts of the rainbow. If all pigments are absorbing equal amounts of light, we see white or grey depending how bright the light is. If one of the pigments is absorbing more light than the others we see a colour. In people with a colour vision deficiency, one of the 3 pigments doesn’t absorb light as well as the others, so a lot more light of that colour is needed to sense it as much as a normal colour sighted person. For example if you had a  tin of white paint an added a small amount of green to it, a colour deficient person would have trouble noticing there has been any change at all. Enchroma glasses can alter the amount of light falling on the 3 pigments in the eye, this allows for a different perception of the colour and brightness. These lenses allow people with colour deficiency to now discriminate colours where there is only a subtle difference in the colour qualities of the object. Not only do Enchroma lenses make a person’s world more vivid, they are better able to perform the many colour coded tasks that exist in or world. Come and see us at our Australia Fair Practice for a free 5 minute assessment and trial of the Enchroma lenses.
Closed Angle Glaucoma

Closed Angle Glaucoma

Closed angle glaucoma is a form of glaucoma where during the course of a few hours the pressure in an eye rises dramatically potentially blinding the eye within a day. This occurs because the coloured part of the eye (Iris) in some individuals is very close to the drainage system of the eye and under the right conditions can close off the outflow of fluid causing the eye pressure to skyrocket. In the past we have used a microscope during normal eye exams to assess peoples risk of this condition. Unfortunately the top down view from the microscope makes it difficult to judge how close the iris is to the drainage system. The advent of high speed OCT scanning means we now get a side on view of this area making it extremely easy to screen patients for this potentially blinding process in a matter of seconds.
Visual Toolbox

Visual Toolbox

For most of our patients (and our Optometrists) who are over 40, using one type of spectacle lens to meet all our visual needs can be very limiting. Over the age of 40 most of us a have lost a lot of our ability to change focus from long distance to close. A pair of multi-focal glasses (or the “Visual Shifting Spanner” as I call them) can allow us to function in many circumstances from long distance viewing, computers to reading, but just like a shifting spanner they are not always ideal for the task. So just like you might need a ring spanner or socket for difficult to reach nuts and bolts, so too might you need an extra pair of spectacles biased towards one particular activity. There are a variety speciality lenses that can provide a better field of view or more comfortable head position for your tasks. General purpose glasses are great, but don’t be afraid to try some other forms of glasses that can be very visually liberating, we would be only to happy to recommend the best tools for you.
